October brings cooler temperatures, changing leaves, and a noticeable shift into the fall season. As the days get shorter and the weather changes, our routines often change with it. It’s a great time to slow down, check in with how our bodies are feeling, and make sure we’re continuing to prioritize movement, mobility, and overall wellness.
This month, we’re taking a look at some of the things that can affect how we feel as we move through the fall. From keeping our bodies moving and reducing stiffness as the weather cools, to understanding how stress can affect us physically as well as mentally, there are plenty of small ways we can support our health throughout the season. We’ll also be recognizing World Spine Day on October 16th with a reminder about the importance of taking care of the spine that supports us every day.
Fall also brings a few important reminders outside of our usual health and wellness tips. With wet leaves and changing weather conditions, it’s a good time to be mindful of where we’re stepping and take a little extra care to avoid slips and falls. And as we head into Thanksgiving and the holiday season, we’re grateful for the opportunity to give back to our community through our October food drive and the generous donations from our patients.
We hope this month’s newsletter gives you a few helpful ideas for staying active, comfortable, and healthy as we settle into the fall season. As always, thank you for being part of the Back To Balance community, and we wish you and your families a happy and healthy October!

October 16th marks World Spine Day, an annual global event dedicated to raising awareness about spinal health and the importance of taking care of the spine throughout our lives. World Spine Day was first established in 2008 and is coordinated by the World Federation of Chiropractic in collaboration with organizations and health professionals around the world. The day brings attention to the impact that spinal pain and disability can have on people of all ages, while encouraging healthier habits and greater awareness of spinal health.
The goal of World Spine Day is not simply to focus on back pain, but to encourage people to be proactive about their spinal health. Staying physically active, maintaining good posture, using proper lifting techniques, creating healthy work environments, and learning more about how to care for your spine are all part of the initiative. It also aims to improve public education, encourage people to take an active role in their own spinal health, and promote better access to appropriate care and resources.
At Back To Balance, we’ll be recognizing World Spine Day throughout the month of October by sharing information and simple, practical ways you can support your spine in your everyday life. We encourage our patients to take a few minutes to learn more about World Spine Day and the importance of spinal health. Scan the QR code above to visit the official World Spine Day website, explore their resources, and find out how you can get involved. Whether it’s making a commitment to move more, improving your workspace, or simply becoming more aware of your spinal health, every small step can make a difference.

As temperatures begin to drop, it’s common to notice a little more stiffness in your muscles and joints. Cooler weather can also make us want to spend more time indoors and move less, which can leave the body feeling even tighter. Staying active and maintaining regular movement can help keep you feeling mobile and comfortable throughout the colder months. Walking, stretching, light exercise, and simply changing positions throughout the day can all help keep your body moving.
Before heading outside for exercise or other activities, give your body some extra time to warm up. A few minutes of light walking or gentle movement can help prepare your muscles and joints before increasing the intensity. Start slowly rather than going straight from sitting to strenuous activity, and gradually build up as your body warms up. Dressing in appropriate layers can also help keep your muscles warm and comfortable while you’re outdoors.
Regular stretching and mobility work are also important during the colder months. Even a few minutes throughout the day can help reduce stiffness, especially if you’re spending more time sitting indoors. Most importantly, don’t let cooler weather become a reason to stop moving. Find activities you enjoy and keep your body active throughout the season. At the same time, listen to your body. While some stiffness may improve with movement, persistent, worsening, or unusual pain shouldn’t be ignored or pushed through.
Keep moving, stay warm, and give your body time to adjust to the changing season.

Stress doesn’t always stay in our minds. When we’re dealing with ongoing stress, our bodies can respond in physical ways too. You may notice tension building in your shoulders and neck, more frequent headaches, tight or sore muscles, clenching or grinding your jaw, or changes in your sleep. Sometimes these symptoms can be easy to overlook or simply chalked up to a busy schedule, but they can be signs that your body is feeling the effects of stress as well.
Finding small ways to manage stress throughout the day can help. Even a short walk or quick burst of exercise can give you a chance to step away and get your body moving. If you’ve been sitting for a while, getting up to stretch, walk around, or change positions can help release some of the tension that builds up throughout the day. Mindfulness and simple breathing exercises can also give your mind a chance to slow down and help you become more aware of where you’re holding tension.
Don’t forget about sleep, either. Maintaining a consistent bedtime routine, limiting screen time before bed, and creating a comfortable environment can help support better sleep habits. Getting enough quality sleep gives both your mind and body an opportunity to recover from the demands of the day.

This October, we’re happy to once again give back to our local community by holding a food drive at Back To Balance. Throughout the month, we’ll be collecting non-perishable food items and cash donations during regular office hours, with all donations going toward helping individuals and families in need.
If you’re able to contribute, we encourage you to bring a non-perishable food item with you during your next visit or make a cash donation at the front desk. Every contribution, big or small, can help make a difference for someone in our community. We truly appreciate the generosity of our patients and are grateful for your continued support of our community initiatives.
Thank you for helping us give back this October!

Fall weather brings beautiful colours, but it can also create some slippery conditions underfoot. Wet leaves, rain, cooler temperatures, and the occasional frost can make familiar sidewalks, steps, and walkways more slippery than they appear. Taking a little extra care can help reduce the risk of an unexpected slip or fall.
When you’re outside, slow down and watch your footing, especially when leaves are covering sidewalks, steps, or uneven ground. If you’re responsible for maintaining your walkways, keep them clear of leaves, branches, and other debris whenever possible. It’s also important to choose footwear with good traction and sturdy support, particularly as outdoor surfaces become wetter and less predictable.
If you’re looking for additional support for your feet and overall comfort while walking, we also offer custom orthotic services here at Back To Balance. Our team can help you learn more about whether custom orthotics may be appropriate for your individual needs.
Slow down, look ahead, and stay steady this fall!

As we settle into the fall season, we hope this month’s tips have given you a few simple ways to stay active, mobile, and feeling your best. As Jeanne Ohm said, “In chiropractic, we don’t treat symptoms. We facilitate healing by adjusting the source.” It’s a great reminder of the importance of taking a proactive approach to your health and giving your body the support it needs.
We want to thank all of our patients for choosing Back To Balance for your care. We truly appreciate the trust you place in our team and are grateful to be part of your health and wellness journey.
From all of us at Back To Balance, we wish you and your families a very happy, healthy, and safe Thanksgiving!
